Sculpting in Preschool: Week 11

We dove into our third week of How We Express Ourselves with a focus on African pottery. We discussed the differences between 2D art and 3D art and shapes, and we learned the word "sculpture." The students also practiced making spheres with play-dough to prepare them for coil pots. For trans-disciplinary learning, we matched the number of spheres with the correct number.

In preschool, we also practiced our problem solving skills. We found lots of cardboard, and recycled it for building. Some of us made houses, railroads, and even a huge cake. You can watch the video on Seesaw to see our critical thinking in action!

We really love painting! With so many textures, colors, and brushstrokes, it really inspires us while we develop our fine motor skills. When we create a collaborative work of art, we learn how to share, communicate, and see new perspectives and techniques. We also learned how to be caring by helping our friends with their smocks. Overall, painting time really helped us develop so many new skills!

While we are building our fine motor skills, we also are learning letter recognition. We went fishing for letters in the water, and then matched the letter on our mat. We were great at using critical thinking skills to find the letters we were not familiar with.

As mentioned above, we learned about pottery techniques by studying African pottery. We talked about the difference between art for decoration and function, and I even passed around some of my own plates, bowls, and cups for the students to feel the different textures. Inspired, we created our first sculpture with 6th grade. We are very proud of what we created!
