Kindergarten - Term 1 Week 11

This week we have been focusing on the difference between the past, present (now) and future. The students looked at photos of things from the past and compared them to the objects that we see around us today. They noticed how many things have changed over time. In particular, they noticed that photos from the past can be black and white or brown and white due to old cameras not being able to photograph colour. Based on these observations, the students attempted to sort a series of photographs into being 'past' or 'present'. They then considered which photos could represent the future.

We discussed what we would love our future house to be like and what cool features it would have. The students had some great ideas and we will continue to listen to some more next week. They had fun creating objects from the future in various different ways: using playdough, drawing on paper and the interactive board, and by building with magnets.

The students were challenged in Language class this week. In addition to our usual flashcard spelling activities, they had two new activities that tested their problem-solving skills. Students had to 'fill in the blanks' and work out which spelling words would perfectly complete the sentences on the board. They then had to spell this word as a group using flashcards. This tested their knowledge of the meanings of their spelling words. They completed another activity in which they had to find some spelling words from the week amongst short paragraphs on the board. This gave students the opportunity to practice reading and also to see how the words and their meanings fit into sentences.

These students won the Reading Snake challenge! Everyone in the class stood in a line (the 'snake') and had to be ready and paying attention to read aloud the next spelling word in the list. These students made it to the final!

In Math, we completed various activities on odd and even numbers. We were able to transfer this knowledge into many things throughout the week, as I often asked students whether certain numbers (particularly the number of table points) were odd or even.

The students enjoyed reading 'Nobody Wanted to Play' on the mat. Some students were able to read the sentences aloud to the class without any help! It was great to see the enthusiasm and willingness to participate and try to read aloud to the class. The students also loved creating questions about the book for their classmates.
