Preschool- P is for Penguins, Paintings, and Pets

This week has been very exciting for preschool! We welcomed new friends to our classroom. Please check seesaw to meet our new class pets, Pterodactyl, T-Rex, Snowy, Baby Rainy, No, and Daddy. The students have been learning how to be gentle, and they enjoy greeting their new pets. Can you find all 6 fish?

On Monday, we continued learning about different seasons. We compared summer and winter, and we matched which clothes we wear for each season. All throughout the week, the students loved comparing summer and winter clothes on the whiteboard.

We also practiced some vocabulary and phonics. Using clothes pins, we chose the correct beginning sound for each word. We were very proud of ourselves for choosing the correct sounds and letters.

For math, we practiced our cutting skills and organizing shapes. We cut out circles, ovals, and triangles to create a penguin. After they dried, we practiced feeding them pom poms. The students counted to see how many pom poms they could feed the penguins.

Speaking of fine motor skills, we put our finger muscles to the test by stringing beads on string. It was challenging, but we all worked very hard.

We always love it when the older grades learn with us! This week, we learned about action painting by studying Jackson Pollock's paintings. We learned that he is from America, which we found on the map. After we were inspired, we went outside to use our gross motor skills to paint like Pollock with 6th grade. It was messy, creative, and so much fun. 

And finally, on Friday, we continued our new tradition of reading with 2nd grade in the library. It is always such a nice way to end the week with our older friends. Every time we meet in the library, the 2nd graders are so happy to see us.

Learning About Winter with Preschool

Welcome back from winter break! We were eager to get back to school and continue our learning. To start, we reviewed our routines and met some new classmates. We worked hard to show our new classmates how to be principled while in the classroom.

Everyone is very careful and focused while working with scissors. We love cutting paper and creating shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Some students even tried to make bullet trains!

Continuing our unit of inquiry, we started with some beautiful watercolor paintings. First, we created our own individual painting, and then, we created a large painting together.

As we learn about January, we started studying snow. Since it is not snowing yet, we decided to make our own snow with Pre-K for a messy, fun, and sensory experience.

Speaking of snow, we all love snowmen so much. We learned a new snowman song that introduces subtraction. We even made our own snowmen out of clay and discussed the difference between our 2D snowmen and 3D snowmen.

To encourage our own reading, 2nd and 4th grade read to us every week. We love showing the older students our favorite books! We also enjoyed learning more about the seasons by reading The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle.

Our class loves games, and so we did a pom pom competition. We split up into three teams, and then we use clothes pins to pick up pom poms and transfer them to our team basket. This helps build fine motor skills so that we will be great writers someday. Then, after we finished, we counted the pom poms together and compared quantities. The yellow team had 46 pom poms!
