Grade 1, 2, 3 Last week of Summer School

Last week of summer school we had the Grade 1, 2 and 3 classes combine. Students had lots of fun learning and playing with their new friends.

In Language students were learning about procedure writing and writing/following instructions.
We practiced this by writing some recipes and making origami following the written and picture instructions. On Friday we finished our procedure learning by making pancakes and following our recipes

In Math we were doing some split class learning, with the Grade 2's and 3's working on mass and Grade 1's looking at 2D and 3D shapes. Grade 2's and 3's practiced using scales to measure classroom objects and which units of measurement were the appropriate choice. Grade 1's built 3D shapes from paper nets and building blocks.

In inquiry we looked at the idea of buoyancy and how different materials are affected in water. We made some origami boats and then tested them to see how much weight they would hold before sinking.

Week 4 Upper PE

We played a parachute game. The children lifted the chute and someone tried to run under the parachute before the chute reached the floor. In other words, the object of the game was to avoid getting captured inside the chute.
The children also played an extension of dodge ball using using pool noodles and balls.

The students gained catching and ball handling skills by playing with a scooping device.

We pretended that we were Dr. COVID-19 and used 100 Yen syringes to squirt each other while playing line tag.  This water play ended our PE sessions for Summer School. Have a great vacation!

Week 4: Pre-K and Kindergarten

As we finish our final week of summer school, Prek and Kindergarten friends read The Gingerbread Man story. Within the story, we learned about the gingerbread man's problem and solution. We also looked at everyday problems we may encounter in our lives and discussed different solutions. Each friend thought of their own problem or things that they need to improve on and with assistance, came up with a solution. We had some friends that said that the coronavirus is a problem and keeping their rooms clean. Some of the solutions were to make a toy box to organize their toys and make a checklist to remind themselves to clean up or make sure they are doing things to keep their bodies healthy.

In math, we practiced addition and used different ways to show it. We also did problem-solving using addition by asking questions to get information to solve the problem.

Preschool/Pre-K: Last Week of Summer School

The last week of summer school was filled with reflections on what we want to be when we grow up. We drew self-portraits of our dream jobs and we plotted it in a chart to see what are the top favorites in our class. The top jobs are singer, dancer, pilot, ninja, and Spiderman!

Wait, did I just say ninja and Spiderman? Why not! Being a superhero is a job too, right? One of our little friends even wanted to be a butterfly!

We also counted how many teachers we have in school. We have 15 students in our class and we also found out that we have 2 school cleaners who help us stay away from germs by making sure that our school is clean. We thanked them for a job well done as we see them working hard to keep us safe. We tried being dentists for a day and learned how to take care of our teeth!

We also had a special guest for a job interview. We asked him W-questions about his job and anything that we are curious to know. Our interviewee was none other than Mr. Mehmet! We learned that he loves pistachios and that he has sisters. He is from Turkey and he speaks many languages. We learned about his job too and that he loves SIS kids so much.

We also became bakers for a day and we made white chocolate chip strawberry cupcakes using clay. We counted how many chocolate chips we placed on top of it and baked it in the oven!

For our last day, we had a costume and dance party. We dressed up as different community helpers and we had so much fun doing role plays and show & tell. Our summer school was such a memorable one because we made new friends, learned new skills, and we experienced enjoyable learning activities too!

Steps on how to travel:

1. Prepare your passport and plane tickets.

2. Go to the airport and don't forget to bring your bags with you!

5. Let's ride the airplane and see the world!

We learned about who we are, expressing ourselves through art, how the world works, and how we organize ourselves in our community. Now, we are ready for our summer vacation!

Grades 4-6 Summer School Week 4

Just like that, summer school is already over! In our final week together as grades 4-6, we wrapped up our personal inquiries, storybooks, and independent math learning.

The creativity, perseverance, and excitement that everyone showed through the independent inquiry process was amazing! All of the students were feeling so proud of their work at the end of the week.

I hope everyone has a restful few weeks of summer before the school year begins. See you soon!

Week 4 Art

Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten did stained glass windows with markers.
Some of our best art ideas come from our surroundings and the things around us.

We worked on bamboo shoots. The children made them with green paint, spoon handles, the edges of Popsicle sticks and brushes.

1st through 3rd changed our pictures to Pop Art images and made buttons.

Some students opted for a distorted image.

We finally decided that peace buttons would be better.

Grades 4 through 6 made anti-gravity suspension structures called Tensegrity. It stands up by pushing and pulling forces.
