Week 3 Term 3 Library

In online Library class, Grade 3 looked at the book entitled ''Dragon Loves Tacos'' by Adam Rubin. 

Week 2 Term 3 Library

In our online Library class, some of the children have been learning to put these fictional titles in the correct order. 

Week 1 Term 3

A book spine  is the side of a book. The spine usually has the title of the book and the author's name. A student needs to be careful with the spine or the book pages will start falling out. A popular English activity these days is to make book spine poetry. We made a proper sentence out of these titles. For example, "The happy kid is skateboarding to the ends of the universe."

We made the first letter of our given names in PreK on Seesaw in order to teach the children about the ABC's and letter recognition.

Week 12 Term 2 Library

The librarian introduced the book "Darth Paper Strikes Back." We decided to do some origami. Here is part of the result.

Week 11 Term 2 Library

On Seesaw some of the children have been reading a story and then thinking of a title for it. Some of the titles were- "What Dogs Feel," "Dogs' Emotions," "How Do Dogs Talk," "Information About Dogs," and "Friendly Dog." This activity gave us an avenue to talk about editing. 

Week 10 Term 2 Library

Some of us listened to the Tale of Peter Rabbit. We decided that Peter really wanted carrots instead of turnips in Mr. McGregor's garden. 

So, we made them with things we found around our house.

Our carrots would have looked delicious to Peter! 

Everybody's carrot turned out great!

Week 9 Term 2 Library

We learned about Zoom from our Supervising Teachers. With this program, we can conference call from home to school. 

The ICT specialist taught us about Seesaw. This is a program  where we can see assignments and post our work. 

Term 2 Week 8 Library

A special "thank you" is extended to the Fukase family who recently donated these books to the SIS library. 

We now have special dedication tags on the books with the names of the people who donated them.

We will stamp the books inside also to remind our readers where these books came from. 

Here is a good quote from our book nook by Frederick Douglas..."Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."

Term 2 Week 7 Library

Thanks to the administration, dreams come true! We will use these bags for our library books. 

A huge thanks goes to the Minos Family who donated  story books to the library with Aboriginal art.

Week 5 Term 2 Library

Our students are diligently helping the Librarian to label, level and tape our books based on the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading system. 

Term 2 Week 4 Library

We have 2 new trees in the Library. Thank you, Mr. Tekin!

Our groups have been talking about real and fake and living and nonliving. 

Term 2 Week 3 Library

Grades 4 and 5 participated in a lovely poetry contest in the Library.

Grade 6 officiated the event. 

Afterwards, the two classes presented a group poem as a gift to the seniors for helping them. 

Term 2 Week 2 Library

Here are the results of opening up our library during recesses.  

The children read and did quiet activities. 

The library now has pencils and paper to enhance the children's research and inquiry. 

Term 2 Week 1 Library

We decided to decorate our Library with the character of Peter Pan and include the story line. Peter Pan's shadow was caught by a dog.   

Some younger groups were read the story "Good Night, Gorilla." The librarian talked about characters and settings with the students. 

Our Library now has books hanging from the branches. Another name for book pages are called leaves. The purpose of the exhibit is to encourage the children to read. Of course our books are made out of Styrofoam and are very lightweight. 

Week 15 Term 1 Library

Seasons Greetings from the Library! Preschool, Pre-K and Kindergarten have been enjoying checking out books and trying to read them. We are encouraging the children to be responsible and bring those books back so that they can checkout more. 

We have been  continuing to label English books according to our Foutas and Pinnell Guided Reading system. 

Week 14 Term 1 Library

Most of our Guided Reading books are so new that the data is not yet found on the internet. As you can see, the publication date on this book is 2020! So, the information has to be manually inputted by the librarian. Also, the icon image has to be scanned or a picture has to be taken of it. 

We figured out some quick ways to take a picture of the book cover using our web cam.

The librarian is leveling our existing library  books by putting our new Guided Reading Fountas and Pinnell levels on the books.  The older ABC books used a color coded system and the F&P books use alphabetical letters. We put our library on Cloud too for teachers to view from their computers anywhere. 

Thanks to the Japanese teachers, the Japanese books are now color coded and leveled!

Week 13 Term 1 Library

Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten checked out books for the first time this week!

The kids are ecstatic! 

Everybody wants to learn to read now!

We tried a new academically orientated recess also. 

We are allowing 10 people to check into the library during recess for quiet activities. 

By the way, many of these photos were taken by the children. 

The librarian will occasionally allow games too but he decided that homerooms are best suited for these types of activities. The librarian doesn't want the children getting mixed messages on what a library's function is.
