Grade 5 Term 2 Week 7

Hello, again grade five families, we are back with yet another grade five blog,

this is what we have been doing currently...

On Tuesday 18th of february we celebrated Japanese Culture Day all

afternoon. We watched ninja's perform dances, battles and more with interesting

props. We had a wonderful time experiencing how ninjas perform and battle in

their everyday life. 

Wednesday and Thursday, the 19th and 20th, we collaborated with grade three

to do some cool experiments. Wednesday, we did rock candy, coke and mentos

in a cup, erosions of wind and sand, explosions and more. We created a packet

to keep track of which experiments we were doing, our predictions and if it was

a physical or chemical reaction, which is what we have been learning about in

inquiry. Thursday we went outside to do the coke and mentos in a bottle this time.

As most expected, it fizzed up and exploded, sending Miss Lauren inside with

sticky coke hands.

After coming back from the last experiments, we did math about volume. We

learnt that volume isn't just how loud or quiet something is, it's also about how

much space something takes up in an area. Like if I had four units squared,

and then something took up three of those units in the square, it would take up

three units of volume in the area.

In guided reading, we have been working with grade six to make presentations

about what elements are in a nonfiction text. Some of the elements are; Title,

chart, infographics and subtitles.

Grade 5 Term 2 Week 6

Hello SIS Families!

This week we started our new unit of inquiry, How the World Works.
Our new central idea is: states of matters used to further human
progress can provide challenges and benefits for society and the
environment.

To start our new unit, we bought snacks from AEON. We bought
lots of chips and chocolate. We tasted and smelled the snacks
and we wrote how it tasted and how it smelled!

We answered some questions with the snacks we bought. We
answered questions about snack inquiry and it was really fun that
we tasted and answered the questions!   

On Wednesday And Thursday we did the ISA test. We did writing,
reading, and math. After the ISA test, we had a great day.

And on Friday we made our portfolio because next week we will
be doing our student conference with our parents.

The news group did lots of things, like they typed a script, filmed
with a camera.

Grade 5 Term 2 Week 5

   For inquiry we did poems about ourselves.

We were getting ready for the celebration

of learning.We put google slides, opening

google photos to show our collage. We did

a lot. We worked really hard to finish this

all in a week! Tired...Very Tired...

        For math we learned about the area and

perimeter of the rectangle and triangle. We

watched a video of the area and perimeter

to understand the area and perimeter. Ms.

Alyssa showed a question to solve this

problem. We use ½ x Base x height to

solve the area of a triangle. 

   We finally painted our Salt Dough map of

Japan. When the salt dough map is dried,

we use light blue, light green, green and brown

paints to decorate the map of Japan. We made

a cool salt dough map of Japan.

We learned many things in language and we did

a field trip reflection. They have lots of questions

and different things to answer with two pictures

that have art on it. For example: when you look

at the art before reading the information plaque,

what do you notice about what the art looks like?

We went on a field trip to Mori Art Museum. We

found amazing realistic art. We were astounded by

how cool the art was. We took lots of photos of the

art. We got back to class at 1:45pm. We looked at

strange and interesting art. And we did Field Trip

Reflection in school.

Grade 5 Term 2 Week 4

Good morning SIS families!

At Inquiry were doing poems about our feelings.

Also we were doing stuff about our fashion, language, writing skills

and our emotions. We were inquirers and we did lots of things

about our feelings. We also learned about our favorite songs. 

And finally we did stuff about our feelings in those songs. We also

did inquiry art about how we felt at that time.

At ICT we make word art and we use our very, very important

key word to make it, like art, inquiry, artist, poetry, poems,

Haiku and Inquirer this is example of keywords!

For language we shared our mood work most of them has great

beautiful art and students understand everyone’s identity that

they have.  Since we wrote mood in poster note and we stick it

to famous art then we separate the feeling. We made poetry

slideshow and it was part of our inquiry. After 7 days, most of

the students got done!

Math we did angles of shapes. The angles we did were acute,

obtuse, right, straight, reflex and adjacent angles.

 We did math art too it was kind of fun and we did show our art  skills.

For music we did, “You Got a Friend in Me” and “Pink Panther”

with boom whacker. Most of as liked pink panther. We’re proud

about play the whole song of “Pink Panther” and “You Got a

Friend in Me.”

Term 2 Week 3

Good Morning SIS families! This week was really

interesting.

For Math, we learned about how to measure angles.
We did some practice on them. We learned things like,
supplementary angles, complementary angles, adjacent
angles, and vertical angles. We all struggled on it
but we finally got over it!

For Inquiry, we dove in more with things such as poems.
We went from knowing one type of poem to around four
to five types. We started to write our own poems about
the different things in our life.

Our favorite part was probably when we listened to
the different poems we were looking at and most
of us liked the poem, Chocolate Cake! We are
going to do a poetry competition with grade 4.

Recently we were asked to make SIS news for the weekly
assembly, so we did our FIRST SIS news, and we
successfully finished it! Ms. Alyssa will share it in an email.

For Buddy Reading, we went over to Pre-K and picked
books and read it to them. It was a lot of fun! The Pre-K
kids were really kind and funny and polite to everyone!

For Guided Reading, we had a new session for editing
our work. Our first time was kind of awkward, because
we didn’t really know what to do but we still were confident
and ok. We’ll get better with it next time!

For Music, we experienced with a brand new instrument
called, boom whacker. It was amazing to use them for
the first time! They were long different coloured and sized
tubes.

Grade 5 Term 2 Week 2

Good morning SIS families! This week in grade 5, we had an

amazing time! 

This week in math, we learned about properties of shapes.

We looked at different shapes and different angles that are

important, like right angles. We also learned about

parallelograms and quadrilaterals.

For inquiry (how we express ourselves) we have been

working on poems called haiku. We also looked at different

types of them. We drew pictures and reflected on the way

they looked included and many more. We looked up many

songs we liked and made a list of them. 

 

This week in Japanese, both Kanji Group and Kokugo Group

saw a movie called 平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ. It was about some

Tanuki, or Japanese racoons worried and angered about

buildings being placed and their forests being cut. It was a very

interesting story, with Tanuki being a shape-shifting animal.

Though, we only saw half of it, so we’re so excited for the next

time!

For P.E, we’ve been doing a unit about soccer, or football. We’ve

been learning and have been cooperating with each  other, and

mostly, we all love it! We practiced some skills and found some

of it hard! 

For ICT,  we’ve been learning syntax codes, and javascript

codes. We’ve been practicing in a website called code

combat, a very fun code game including a little of fighting,

avoiding, running, and building. It was a replacement of

grasshopper, another java code website, which we

figured out was pretty boring. When Mr.Vamiq

showed us Codecombat, we instantly had so much fun!

For Music, We’ve been practicing Aruko, From Totoro.

We first practiced with bells, and saw it was hard to

match the rhythm and going in the right timing with

others. Aruko was a memorable song which everyone

knew, so it was very easy knowing how to play, but

very hard actually playing it. Though, we had a blast!

Grade 5 Term 2, Week 1

Hello SIS families! For the first week of being in school after winter break,
us grade 5 have done multiple things, and have gotten started on our
central idea. Our central idea is:

Identity is expressed through personal presentation.

In inquiry, we have gotten started and got thinking about different forms of
self expression that makes our identity. We brainstormed about different
forms of self expression, and chose 3 favorite ones, and chose 3 least
favorite ones. We explained one favorite form of expression very detailed.

We then thought about expression through music. Ms. Alyssa then put on
different music, and we thought about what feeling was expressed from

that song. We then chose our favorite songs, and wrote them down in
Google slides. We then chose one song of our favorite songs, then
wrote the following: What parts of our identity is represented in this song?
Why do we like this song? When do we listen to this song? and finally,
What this song communicates to the world about us? 

For math, we started on doing geometry. We started learning about
the properties of shapes, and learned important parts of shapes and
lines, like angles, intersections, and parallel, for example. Ms. Alyssa
then showed us different properties of shapes from Khan Academy.
We learned things like trapezoids, parallelograms, rhombuses, and more. 

On the performance day last year, us grade 5 performed multiple
things. We were both nervous and excited, but we tried our best.
Our first performance was upper Japanese. The name of the song
is "Top of the World." We worked with guitar ASP and sang the song.
Because it was the first performance that my class had, we were
nervous of how many people there were. It was a great one.

The next one was the puppet show. We worked very hard to do
a puppet show, and we were very excited for all of this. We practiced
it multiple times, but in the performance, it didn't go as expected.
Overall, we were very sad and angry at ourselves for not doing good.

The next one was “Happy.” Led by Mr. Thomas, it was based on the
minions song. This song was practiced hundreds of times, and it was
super perfect. If you didn’t know, we had sun glasses on when we did
“Happy.” It ended perfectly.

The last one was "Totoro." This was also practiced multiple times, and
it was the only performance that included all of us to play an instrument.
Grade 5 did melodica. When it ended, we were all so relieved. Overall,
it was a great performance.
