Grade 6 Week beginning 02/17

Grade 6 have started to find out about our new unit. Students have been using their research skills to find out about the Solar system and our Universe. We spent a good bit of time planning the unit ahead and have finally decided on a Central Idea and two of our three lines of inquiry.

As Part of Japanese Cultural Day we had some special ninjas come and perform for us. Students learned what it takes to be a Ninja and got to have some target practice using some Shuriken. 

Grade 6 Week Beginning 02/10

This week Students worked very hard during their ISAs and we will receive the results soon.

We also had some very special visitors to Grade 6 this week. kindergarten cam to collect data about our favorite land, air and water animals.

Some students decided to make a chocolate sweet to celebrate St. Valentines day. Wonderful Agency from those that planned the activity and I am sure everyone enjoyed their sweet at the end. 

Elsewhere, we began our new unit, How the World Works. We shall be carrying out an inquiry into Space Exploration and Robotics over the next number of weeks.  We started this week by tuning into the scale of the Solar System and the entire Universe a a whole. Grade 6 mapped out their own scale model of the Solar System, and how far away from the Sun each Planet's orbit is.

Grade 6 Week beginning 03/02

Busy week this week in Grade 6.

We wrapped up our How We Express Ourselves unit. We concluded our Art Collaboration with Pre-School with a collaborative reflection on the different pieces of Art that we made.

Thank you for coming to the celebration of learning. We had a great time sharing some of our learning with you all.

In Math We have been making different prisms and using our problem soling skills to calculate the surface area and the volume of the various different shapes.

Grade 6 Week 4 Term 2

In this picture we can see they are cooperating and be creative by making shapes with straws. At math time we are working on geometry's vertices, edges, area and also shapes. 

Students were practicing their collaboration and inquiry Math skills when trying to make a 3D shape with 14 edges. This developed into making shapes with no edges, as seen above.

Action

In this picture we can see that kids playing around the gym. That time students were listening to music and we recorded their reactions. Everyone was really hyped. Many kids danced around but some didn't like. I mean Everyone has different opinions. :)

Other Students went around different classes to collect data about how music affects us.

Grade 6 have also been taking turn to teach the rest of the students about the different Learner Profile Attributes. This week we discussed Knowledgeable.

Grade 6 Week Beginning 20/01

                    On Friday, we collaborated with Grade 1. We read with each other. It was really fun.

 Last week we started reading with Grade 5 in the same reading levels.

On Math time, we formed groups for a math question. We learned about percentages, decimals and sales:)

Grade 6 Week Beginning 13/01

Grade 6 have been carrying out their inquiry into How Art (Music) often reflects cultural experience and is influenced by technological progress. Students have been using apps to compose some music and are starting to look into the ways Music affects us either by exploring sound waves or the connections we make with music, both physical and emotional.

In collaboration with Pre-School we explored action painting and looked at some of the work by Jackson Pollock before creating out own piece of Action Art.

Elsewhere, students are beginning to turn their attention towards the Exhibition which we hope to start at the end of this term. We have started collecting ideas for potential Exhibition ideas and are thinking about where they would fit into the different PYP Transdisciplinary Themes.

Grade 6 Term 2 Week 1 beginning 1.6.20

Meanwhile back in class Grade 6 have been planning our new How We express Ourselves Unit. We will be exploring Music Media and Me.

Students brainstormed the different concepts for our unit and developed these ideas into our lines of Inquiry. This unit aims to be very self directed with students taking charge of their planning and organizing themselves toward a summative assessment over the next 4 weeks.









Some of our first activities included composing simple rhythm patterns and joining in with others.

Grade 6 Week Beginning 12/9

Last week of 2019 in Grade 6. We have been busy preparing for a presentation about Ancient Civilizations over the last number of weeks. This week, students, finally got to share all the information that they had researched and prepared for a presentation. Grades 4 and 5 learned a lot about history and they had the opportunity to do some activities inspired by the presentations like writing their initials in Egyptian Hieroglyphs or reading some comics about Asterix the Gaul.

Grade 4 were kind enough to return the favor for us and planned a treasure hunt for us in the park to share what they had learned during their unit about explorers and navigation.

To mark the end of the calendar year we shared our understanding about the different key concepts. Some students decided to make some chocolate sweets to show their understanding of the key concept causation.

Grade 6 Week Beginning 12/2/19

The end of the calendar year is nearly upon us and preparations are being made for our end of year Winter Performances. The entire SIS community is coming together to share our learning this term in an artistic way.

Upper Primary rehearsals

Meanwhile, in class grade 6 students are continuing their preparations for presentations about how the Ancient World impacts our Modern life today. Grade 4 and Grade 5 have been invited to come to see our presentations. Students are thinking of ways to make their presentations more interactive and we have come up with some very interesting ideas.

What civilizations do these represent?

In Math, we are consolidating our learning and self assessing our ability to work with numbers. Plans are underfoot to make some Math games and resources to make our learning more meaningful and fun.

Finally, we have returned to our clay pottery to add some colour. Did you know some of the earliest examples of pottery come from Japan. We hope to continue our collaborative art project with Pre-School, in the New Year.
