Grade 3 How the World Works

This week we began our new unit of inquiry, How the World Works.  Grade 3 will be learning about the Earth and how it changes over time.  During library, the students started their research to write breaking news stories about different forms of weather that can change how Earth looks.

This week they also did some creative writing around the word love.  We then turned their writing and pictures into a quilt to hang outside our classroom.

Finally, to help us to understand multiplication better, we made multiplication towers using graph paper.  This visual will help them to better understand that they do not have to count each block but instead count just the top row and the first side row to find out how many blocks altogether.

Grade 3 Celebration of Learning

During our unit, How We Express Ourselves, the students in grade 3 learned how commercials can persuade people to buy products.  The students learned that they had to be responsible business people and sell a product or a place fairly.  They needed to show how they could make connections and reach a larger audience as well as understand the perspective of what the audience was looking for in a product.  Each group created their own product, designed and edited the commercials.  It was great to see how they cooperatively worked together and showed respect by listening to each other.  Here are the five commercials!  We hope you enjoy!!

Here are some pictures from Celebration of Learning!  Grade 3 students were also the MCs of the show and participated in drama club and music performances!

Grade 3 Communication, Cooperation and Respect

Grade 3 has had a busy week finishing our commercials for our Inquiry project.  We have also been focusing on what it is like to be an effective communicator, work cooperatively in groups and how to show respect to everyone.  As part of their group work for Inquiry, the students had to focus on these skills and learner profiles to help them be better life long learners.

We sat in two groups to come up with what we thought were definitions and examples for respect and cooperation.  Then the students shared what they learned with each other.

This week we also filmed our commercials for our products.  The students designed, planned out the video and edited the videos.  Here are some behind the scene shots of their video shoot!

Stay tuned for next week as we will reveal our commercials that we have been working on for the last several weeks!

Grade 3 Creating Commercials

This week during Inquiry, grade 3 began creating commercials for products that they want to create and sell to a target audience.  Working in groups the students have to design a product or redesign a real product, create the product, plan out how to shoot the commercial and then next week they will video their commercial.  Each group is working hard to create and design their products.  Stay tuned for pictures from their video shoot next week!

Grade 3 Math and Inquiry

This week in Math we have been focusing on Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication.  Students are working together in groups to complete assignments as well as play games to help them strengthen their skills in Math.  They practiced these skills using dice games, spinner games and circle grids.

This week we also started our new inquiry unit, How We Express Ourselves.  To start off our unit, students drew pictures of themselves about how they felt coming back to school after having three weeks off.  Most of the students said they were happy or excited to return to school!  During this unit, the students are going to learn how images, commercials and themselves can affect how others feel about something.
