Japanese Class and Guitar ASP performances

タイトルは、「Take me home, country road」です。発表が近くなると、朝練習もしました。歌の始まりが難しくて何度も練習を重ねてきました。Grade3 とGrade4 の、5人の子どもたちの息の合った演奏をご覧ください。

演奏の始まりは、50 seconds 辺りです。

Graduation and Celebration of Learning G5 and 6

Congratulations to Diego, our 6th Grade student, for graduating from Shinagawa International School.

We had a cap and gown ceremony.

This is our version of Alice in Wonderland.

As a PYP Graduation Project, this student gave a presentation about Air Contamination that he researched. This was one of his initial runs through the material. After the 5th time, he was an expert.

Grade 2 Year End Performance

We wrapped up the 2018 - 2019 school year with our year end performances. Grade 2 chose to do a play based off the book The Great Kapok Tree. I wish nothing but the best for the students who are now moving on to grade 3. Enjoy your summer vacation and be ready for another great year!

Grade 4 - "What's This?" Year End Performance

Here is Grade 4 performing their own rendition of the song, "What's This?", from the movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas.  Some of the 4th Grade students changed the lyrics to be about the curiosity, inquiries and progression of scientific understanding by Issac Newton and Galileo.  Enjoy!

What’s This? (SIS Grade 4 Newton/Galileo version)
lyrics by Beyza, Rui, Anisa, Busra and Mr. V

What’s this? What’s this?
There’s something very new
What’s this?
Discovery everywhere
What’s this?
I can’t believe my eyes
This is fantastic
Can I possibly learn more?
What’s this?

What’s this? What’s this?
There’s something moving there
What’s this?
An apple falling down
What’s this?
The trees are filled with apples falling
All of them hit something different
Can I possibly learn more?
What is this? What’s this?

There are balls all over here
And motion everywhere
Will the big ball knock ‘em down?
The small balls, they go where?

There’s a big ball over there
I can’t believe my eyes
When I throw the ball from one side
It’s making them fall down

Oh, look! What’s this?
Remember Newton’s Laws, they’re right!
I add a thing to them, inspired!
We’re gathering around to hear
What he will say about the world
What’s this?

What’s this?
Right here, I’ve got two different rocks.  Let’s try
To drop them from the top
And see?
If they fall at the same time
Could it be my guess was right?
I’ve just discovered something new
So, now correct me if I’m wrong
I got it right!  I got it right!
My hypothesis was really right!
What’s this?

Oh my, what now?
Saturn’s over here
But look, now it’s over there
I use my telescope to see the moving planets
And it seems that we are moving around the sun
What’s this?

The churches all say I’m wrong
But they’re just ignorant
Why don’t they just listen
‘Cause I know that I’m correct

Instead of hearing what I say
They always think they’re right
So instead I’ll just say sorry
But actually I’m right

The things I learned
Are all around my head, and so
I’ve never learned so much, before
This empty place inside of me is filling up
I simply cannot learn enough

I want to, oh, I want to
Oh, I want to know much more
I’ve got to know
I’ve got to know
The science of the world
What is this?

Grade 2 Sharing Our Learning

This week, grade 2 had the opportunity to share their learning with grade 1 students. In our last unit of inquiry, students had to make a brochure for an organization they created that helps endangered animals. They were really excited to share their organizations! Why should students share their work? One reason is that when students know they are going to share, they are more engaged and motivated to do their best work. Another reason is that it shows the students they have a voice and purpose for creating meaningful and authentic work. Lastly, it helps students become more confident because in sharing, work is being valued.

Grade 1 - End of the Year

It's hard to believe we're finished with the year! We've all learned and grown so much this year in Grade 1. We've learned to share our ideas appropriately as communicators, to listen to others' opinions and be open-minded, to become thinkers who can inquire about the world, and to reflect on our learning so we can continue to grow. We are proud of the work we have done this year and excited to share our portfolios for our student-led conferences.

It's been a wonderful year, Grade 1! Best of luck next year in Grade 2!

SIS Lego Robotics ASP

The students have now finished up the Lego Robotics ASP in preparation for next year's team.  Along with practicing building and programming the robots, I hope that everyone learned the value of one of the FLL core values, Coopertition, which is a combination of cooperation and competition.  We had three groups competing to get the most missions done, but in the process the teams sometimes had to work together to help answer questions or learn from each other's successes and failures.  In the end, the students can take what they have done pushing each other with competition, put it together to form a stronger team through cooperation, and do the best possibe in competition at the tournament.

Check out the groups working on testing their missions and solving problems.

Grade 3 - Importance of Theatre Arts in schools

With the year end performance approaching, the students have been working really hard to practice for their big performances!  The importance of drama and performing arts in education is significant.  Whether children have the opportunity to perform in theatre productions or help out behind the scenes, studying Drama and Performing Arts not only engages with the creative side of the brain, it also provides an ideal balance in students’ patterns of study.  Students gain important life skills as they learn the value of critical feedback, both positive and constructive.  Children have the opportunity to celebrate the richness and depth of human expression in all of its forms. Through creative expression students learn to comprehend our world better and are therefore better equipped to navigate the challenges they might be faced with later in life.  Here are some pictures of our practice at the theater this past week!
