Grade 5: Nihon Minka en Museum

Grade 5 began writing their Japanese myth based on the story of Yamata-no Orochi and Susano, god of the seas. We immersed ourselves in the forest, in which Susano landed when banished from Takamagahara, by listening to a calming forest soundscape. They have been using fantastic description to describe the setting and introduce the protagonist of the story. Have a look at some of their work below.

In inquiry, the children looked at different time periods in Japanese history and ordered them in chronological order on a timeline. They then began to make a class timeline, making connections between Japan and other world events. We found out that during the Yayoi period, the Roman Empire was expanding in Europe and the Great Wall of China was built.

We also went on a field trip to the Nihon Minka en Museum. With the help of three fantastic ladies, the children had a go at Indigo dying. Despite the smells, the children created some fantastic designs.

We then walked around and looked in and around the buildings, inquiring about how they were made, what they were made of and how people kept warm.

One of our students took action and made a fantastic video about our day to show exactly what we did. See the link below.
