Grade 3 Create your own Map and Treasure Hunt

Our lines of inquiry are helping us to study about reading maps and the different types of maps there are in the world.  Students are learning how things are represented on maps and that maps change as time changes.  They are learning that the world is not just made up of where they live but it is made up of oceans and countries as well.  This week the students worked on a treasure hunt map to find the hidden treasure.  They enjoyed trying to follow the directions to the buried treasure.

After being able to read a map and locate things on a map, students created their own imaginary island or place.  They had to name the place, put a scale and a key, as well as a compass on their map.  They enjoyed making their own maps and showing them to the class.
