Kindergarten - Term 2 Week 4

This week in Inquiry, we have been open-minded and learnt about some ways in which Chinese people express their happiness, joy, and hope for the future during the Chinese New Year holiday.

We began the week by investigating - noting the things we could see in a walking tour video of Yokohama's Chinatown. The students noticed that there were lots of lanterns in the street and red and yellow/gold things! They also 'walked around' on Google Maps by putting the yellow man down on the roads. They could also practice the directions they learnt in Math class!

The students used tally charts to record how many times they saw things.

We had a look at our Chinese zodiac animal according to the years in which we were born.
The students were born in the year of the snake or the year of the horse!
Ms. Becca and Ms. Anna were born in the year of the monkey!

The students made their own paper chain dragons! In Chinese culture, dragons symbolise good luck.

The students also made their own lanterns! The Chinese lanterns are red and gold as they believe that red brings happiness and gold brings wealth.

Kindergarten collaborated with Preschool to make firework salt paintings.
The Chinese set off fireworks at midnight to begin Chinese New Year!

Ms. Lacey asked the children what they thought fireworks were.

Ms. Lacey wrote down the students' thoughts on fireworks.

A video explaining what fireworks are.

The students used lolly sticks to put glue on black paper in the shape of a firework.
They then put salt on top!

The firework salt pictures are now drying in the toy kitchen! We will paint and decorate them on Monday!

Grade 6's unit of inquiry is also 'How We Express Ourselves'. On Thursday morning, three grade 6 students came into Kindergarten class to investigate how the students reacted to different kinds of music. They then asked the students about how the songs made them feel.

In Math, we spent Monday and Tuesday continuing directions and spacial vocabulary words.
The students were researchers, as they walked from the school to Family Mart (only at the end of the road!) and noted the directions they took to get there.

When we arrived back at school, the students wrote up their findings.

We then moved onto the topic of Patterns.
The students used their thinking skills to make creative patterns using a variety of things in the classroom.
Here are some of the things we did:

We learnt '-or-' words this week in Language class.

Some photos from play times throughout the week:

Some students are really curious about the world and often choose to explore the map in the morning while they wait for other students to arrive :)
