This week, Kindergarten have been open-minded and observed different styles of painting as ways of expressing different cultures and feelings.
After reviewing the way the aboriginal Australians expressed themselves through their rock dot paintings....
We looked at Pop Art and appreciated the bright colours and thick lines used.
We realised that some Indian people also use bright colours to express their happiness during the Holi festival, where they celebrate the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring.
The students were great thinkers, and shared some ideas of how we could create a splatter - style painting inspired by the Holi festival. We decided to use watered-down bright coloured paints and tap paintbrushes on our fingers to make the paint 'splatter'. To make the artwork more eye-catching and to try something new, we used tinfoil as a canvas.
I created another 'art exhibition' in the classroom for the children to observe a variety of landscape paintings. The children observed the paintings respectfully and quietly in small groups, keeping their opinions in their heads ready to share in our discussion on the mat.
Some volunteers presented which paintings they liked the most and explained why.
The students observed that the landscape paintings looked realistic, had lots of detail and were painted very beautifully. They tried to replicate this by colouring in a mountain landscape carefully and beautifully.
The students also contributed to a bar chart to share which painting style they preferred so far.
Lastly, we looked at abstract, geometric art.
The students observed that they had lots of shapes in them. The students used their thinking skills again to consider how we could recreate a geometric piece of artwork in the classroom.
We decided to use both 2d and 3d shapes from the classroom to create our own geometric art. We didn't only stick to the shapes we use in Math class - we also used some shaped toys! The students coloured their geometric artwork using crayons and colour pencils.
