Grade 1 - A Visit from the Doctor

We had a visit from Dr. Levent Beder, an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist. He answered many of our questions based on our knowledge from this unit.
  • Where do germs come from?
  • How do germs make us sick?
  • Why do germs divide (grow in numbers)?
  • Why can't we smell when we have a stuffy nose?

He taught us that there are two kinds of germs - good ones that protect us and keep us healthy, and bad ones that make us sick. These bad germs divide and grow into large numbers, and attack our bodies. Since germs are everywhere, they enter our bodies from places like our nose and mouth, especially when we put our fingers in. He reminded us that in order to stay healthy, we need to make sure we washed our hands and gargled our mouths. Thank you for coming in to teach us about how to stay healthy!

This week in math, we learned about comparing lengths. We have worked on using our vocabulary words: short, shorter, shortest, long, longer, longest. When we compare people's heights, we use the words tall, taller, and tallest. We had fun comparing our pencils to things around the classroom to see if the object was shorter or longer.

Literacy Week is approaching quickly! Next week, we will have guest readers coming in, buddy reading opportunities with another grade level, and a costume parade when we dress as our favorite characters from a book! The book fair will be happening all week too. Grade 1 set a goal of reading 1000 pages for the two weeks before Literacy Week...do you think we met our goal?
