We have started a new transdisciplinary unit entitled "How We Express Ourselves."
Grade 5 has been writing some haiku and tanka poetry in English. This style of poetry originates from Japan. Tanka means "short song" and haiku translated is "cutting words." This writing process will help us answer one of our lines of inquiry, "How do we communicate our identity?
A haiku poem has a pattern of 5-7-5. That means a total of 17 syllables or sounds.
On the other hand, a tanka has the same 5-7-5 pattern at the beginning plus 7-7 for a total of
5-7-5-7-7.
So far we have written 29 poems! We are hoping to make a real poetry anthology book and an online e-book.
