Grade 1 and 4 - Communication Collaboration

This week we had an opportunity to collaborate with Grade 4! We partnered up with each other to work on one of the pages from the book we read last week, "happy, sad, feeling glad" by Yasmeen Ismail. We had to communicate our ideas and thoughts to create a piece of art together, and this was harder than we initially expected.

The page we worked on showed the character feeling proud. Partners had to use their imagination and creativity to come up with an idea for a machine that the character created.

Once we finished, we presented our artwork by explaining what the machine did, and what made us feel proud during this project. Many of us said we were proud of communicating with each other, coming up with good ideas, and just simply proud of the amazing artwork we created. We also learned that despite having different ideas, we can still communicate those disagreements and work through them.

Grade 1 reflected on this opportunity afterwards, and said we felt shy, nervous, or worried at first, because we couldn't think of ideas. It was also a bit difficult communicating with someone outside of our class, and presenting to a larger audience than usual. But in the end, through guidance and help from our Grade 4 friends, we were able to communicate our ideas clearly, and we enjoyed working together on our artwork. Also, we reflected that we didn't only rely on verbal communication; we used a combination of gestures, facial expressions, as well as body language in addition to speaking, to communicate and express our thoughts and feelings. Thank you Grade 4, and we hope we can collaborate again in the future!
