Grade 3 Science Experiments and Geometry Centers

Grade 3 is finishing up our unit on How the World Works, where students learned about various natural disasters during the unit.  This week, we experimented with different ways to make a volcano explode.  The students experimented using two different methods.  The first one was with Coke and Mentos.  They only saw a small reaction, which was due to the soda being in a cup and not in a bottle.  The second way was using baking soda and vinegar in a cup. This time the students saw how lava would come out of a volcano.  It was also a great way for them to see that not all Science experiments work on the first try or how they see them on the Internet.  The students also made a Tornado in a bottle using 2-liter bottles, water and blue food coloring.  They were really surprised to see how a tornado can be made using these supplies.  It was a fun day for them!

We also finished up our Geometry unit in Math this week.  We took all of our knowledge to solve riddles, draw shapes, play a matching game and draw a city made only from geometric shapes learned.  This was a great way for the students to finish the unit and work together to problem solve!
