Grade 5/6 Week 5 How we organize ourselves

Transdisciplinary Theme: How we organize ourselves
Central Idea: Economic activity relies on systems of production, exchange and consumption of goods and services.
Related Concepts: Systems, interdependence, citizenship
Lines of inquiry:
  • Function - The role of supply and demand.
  • Connection - The distribution of goods and services.
  • Responsibility - Our responsibility as consumers.
This week, we have just started our new unit of inquiry. We firstly began with the central idea. After we read it, we came up with a few difficult words such as, economic activities, consumption, goods. After we checked their meaning, central idea started to become much clearer. We had a discussion and brainstorming about it. It was a really good start since we discovered a wide range of key words such as produce, manufacture, factory, sell/buy, store, online shopping, amazon, investment, profit, risk, money, advertisement, trading, second hand shops, etc. After this tuning in session, we will start to search about our inquiry deeply and choose our projects.

Regarding Math, In Grade 5, we understand the concept of multiplication and division of fractions and use a variety of methods, such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, tables, diagrams, and models, to explain mathematical reasoning. In Grade 6, we solve problems involving proportion and ratio. We also search the idea of direct proportion in a wide range of context and its connection to ratio.
