Grade 4, 5 and 6 - Word Study

In Grades 4-6, students learn about English language during Word Study.  The students work in groups with a different word list every two weeks trying to learn the definitions, spellings, pronunciations and how to use them in sentences. They sort words based upon phonetic spelling patterns, syllabication or pronunciation patterns.  They use dictionaries to find definitions and parts of speech to be able to use them in sentences.  They find words in word searches.  They write group stories using all their words.  Throughout the time, they are not only learning how to spell, how to read, how to speak and how to use the words in writing, but also how to work together by sharing ideas constructively, checking each others work and taking responsibility for their time and roles in the group.
