Grade 3 and 4 Week 2 SIS Summer School

As a community project, we made some alphabet letters out of wood. We clamped them on the library shelves for the categorization of books. 

The students have been learning about batik and positive and negative values in art.

The children drew a picture with a pencil on a piece of cloth. Then, we used  hot glue instead of wax to outline the picture. After that, we painted the picture and peeled the glue.  

This is a finished product of a lion and some scared people. 

This week in mathematics we learned about multiplying fractions by playing Snow Sprint.

We also studied exponents by playing Otter Pal.

Our final game was Dirt Bikes to get a grasp on proportions.

Click our Movie that was produced by Nour, directed by Jake and voice acted by their classmates. This is Chapter 1 and 2 of the book and movie of the Watsons go to Birmingham. The director said that the hardest part of making the video was dealing with all the people. 

The pupils did some computer coding with the Tokyo Coding Club.

We did the 12 Bar Blues in Music class to learned how to incorporate intervals. The children are writing and composing their own songs based on Music theory and the difference between pitches and two sounds. 

Grade 3 and 4 Summer School Week 1

Our SIS students have been very busy during the first week of Summer School. Here are some activities that we have worked on from July 5th to the 9th. First, we began with some Sudoku in Math class. This challenged the students to look for patterns, observe clues and to become thinkers. 

In Art, we used popsicle sticks to make exquisite baskets. Some of us added our initials for personalization! The design incorporated the same construction principles as a stadium.

We studied about a Swiss mathematician and scientist named Euler. He was responsible for traffic control in a city named Königsberg in Prussia. This city was renamed Kaliningrad and it is now a part of Russia. Euler wanted to make sure that the people only went across a bridge once and therefore congestion would be halted. Engineers had traffic jams in the 1700's similar to modern times.

The children tried their hands at different combinations with river configurations to see if it was possible to pass over the bridge once. They also created their own bridges and painstakingly measured the dimensions on construction paper. 

Our students did some cartography and made the Pregel River, surrounding landscape and bridges. Here is a bird's eye view of their work. The bridges were strong enough to hold a pair of scissors. 

We wrote postcards to Grade 1 and 2 to help them learn some Science concepts about corks and the Aurora Borealis. We pretended that we were the Aurora and corks and wrote from these perspectives. The properties about corks that were trying to drive home is that they have a low density, are light, waterproof, recyclable, resistant to friction, higroscopic, and are good for sound insulation. The aurora borealis attributes that we were trying to drive home was that it is unpredictable, it can be seen in the northern and southern Hemispheres as well as the planets and that it is caused by particles and magnetic forces.

I am really light. That means that I don't need to go on a diet. I can't figure out one word that the scientist said to me. The word is density. Can you help me?

We played a couple of online games in Mathematics to help secure some foundations in fractions. The converted fractions to decimals and reduced them to their lowest common denominator. 

We played a math game that required us to use the least amount of building supplies and pay a fraction of the cost to build a bridge across a river. Our lowest amount was $300. 

The first place winner received a gold Olympic keychain. 

The students participated in some STEM activities by doing some camera work. 

Our class has been reading chapter 1 of the book The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. This is a Newberry Honor book which distinguishes it as being one of the best books in Children's Literature. The story is about segregation and prejudice in America in 1963. We are doing some cross media inquiry by using videos and books. 

We also read a story about two brothers that didn't get along. They fixed a bridge so that they could bridge the gap between their differences. Moral: There is no shame in accepting your mistake or forgiving each other. We should be kind and humble. We should try to stay together as a family and not break away from it over the petty arguments.

Grade 1, 2, 3 Last week of Summer School

Last week of summer school we had the Grade 1, 2 and 3 classes combine. Students had lots of fun learning and playing with their new friends. 

In Language students were learning about procedure writing and writing/following instructions. 

We practiced this by writing some recipes and making origami following the written and picture instructions. On Friday we finished our procedure learning by making pancakes and following our recipes

In Math we were doing some split class learning, with the Grade 2's and 3's working on mass and Grade 1's looking at 2D and 3D shapes. Grade 2's and 3's practiced using scales to measure classroom objects and which units of measurement were the appropriate choice. Grade 1's built 3D shapes from paper nets and building blocks. 

In inquiry we looked at the idea of buoyancy and how different materials are affected in water. We made some origami boats and then tested them to see how much weight they would hold before sinking. 

Week 4 Upper PE

We played a parachute game. The children lifted the chute and someone tried to run under the parachute before the chute reached the floor. In other words, the object of the game was to avoid getting captured inside the chute.

The children also played an extension of dodge ball using using pool noodles and balls. 

The students gained catching and ball handling skills by playing with a scooping device. 

We pretended that we were Dr. COVID-19 and used 100 Yen syringes to squirt each other while playing line tag.  This water play ended our PE sessions for Summer School. Have a great vacation! 

Week 4: Pre-K and Kindergarten

As we finish our final week of summer school, Prek and Kindergarten friends read The Gingerbread Man story. Within the story, we learned about the gingerbread man's problem and solution. We also looked at everyday problems we may encounter in our lives and discussed different solutions. Each friend thought of their own problem or things that they need to improve on and with assistance, came up with a solution. We had some friends that said that the coronavirus is a problem and keeping their rooms clean. Some of the solutions were to make a toy box to organize their toys and make a checklist to remind themselves to clean up or make sure they are doing things to keep their bodies healthy.

                                                    

In math, we practiced addition and used different ways to show it. We also did problem-solving using addition by asking questions to get information to solve the problem.
