ICT - Grade 5: Lightbot

Lightbot is an educational video game for learning software programming concepts. The goal of Lightbot is to command a little robot to navigate a maze and turn on lights. Grade 5 students arrange symbols on the screen to command the robot to walk, turn, jump, switch on a light and so on.

The maze and the list of symbols become more complicated as the lessons progress. While using such commands, the students learn programming concepts like loops, procedures and more, without entering code in any programming language.

Once they have understood what programming means on a general level, and that is about thinking algorithmically to get to a solution, they began to see how Lightbot relates to programming.

 

Week 13 Term 1 Library

Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten checked out books for the first time this week!

The kids are ecstatic! 

Everybody wants to learn to read now!

We tried a new academically orientated recess also. 

We are allowing 10 people to check into the library during recess for quiet activities. 

By the way, many of these photos were taken by the children. 

The librarian will occasionally allow games too but he decided that homerooms are best suited for these types of activities. The librarian doesn't want the children getting mixed messages on what a library's function is.

Week 13 Term 1 Upper PE

 

Some of us played "War Ball" with big, medium and small size balls. If a person got hit with the medium sized ball then he/she needed to be dragged back to their home base and the person could play again. The little balls were used to score in the goals. 

Some of the goalies got creative and osculated big balls back and forth to ward away balls. 

Grade 5 and 6 are doing a basketball unit. Look at their teamwork!

Grade 2 Our Skills

Grade 2 students have been focusing skills such as  respecting others, collecting data, and their listening and writing skills. They wrote about how they can use certain skills inside and outside of the classroom. They also discussed what skills that felt strong in and the skills they felt they needed to work on. 

We finally displayed our migration graphs. 

In math, we started looking at the calendar to understand days of the week, number of days in a month, the months of the year, and matching the months to the seasons. On day one, they worked with a partner and recorded what happens each month and then put the months in order. 

It's always a fun time buddy reading with the preschool students.
