Preschool- P is for Penguins, Paintings, and Pets

This week has been very exciting for preschool! We welcomed new friends to our classroom. Please check seesaw to meet our new class pets, Pterodactyl, T-Rex, Snowy, Baby Rainy, No, and Daddy. The students have been learning how to be gentle, and they enjoy greeting their new pets. Can you find all 6 fish?

On Monday, we continued learning about different seasons. We compared summer and winter, and we matched which clothes we wear for each season. All throughout the week, the students loved comparing summer and winter clothes on the whiteboard.

We also practiced some vocabulary and phonics. Using clothes pins, we chose the correct beginning sound for each word. We were very proud of ourselves for choosing the correct sounds and letters.

For math, we practiced our cutting skills and organizing shapes. We cut out circles, ovals, and triangles to create a penguin. After they dried, we practiced feeding them pom poms. The students counted to see how many pom poms they could feed the penguins.

Speaking of fine motor skills, we put our finger muscles to the test by stringing beads on string. It was challenging, but we all worked very hard.

We always love it when the older grades learn with us! This week, we learned about action painting by studying Jackson Pollock's paintings. We learned that he is from America, which we found on the map. After we were inspired, we went outside to use our gross motor skills to paint like Pollock with 6th grade. It was messy, creative, and so much fun.

And finally, on Friday, we continued our new tradition of reading with 2nd grade in the library. It is always such a nice way to end the week with our older friends. Every time we meet in the library, the 2nd graders are so happy to see us.

Grade 6 Week Beginning 13/01

Grade 6 have been carrying out their inquiry into How Art (Music) often reflects cultural experience and is influenced by technological progress. Students have been using apps to compose some music and are starting to look into the ways Music affects us either by exploring sound waves or the connections we make with music, both physical and emotional.

In collaboration with Pre-School we explored action painting and looked at some of the work by Jackson Pollock before creating out own piece of Action Art.

Elsewhere, students are beginning to turn their attention towards the Exhibition which we hope to start at the end of this term. We have started collecting ideas for potential Exhibition ideas and are thinking about where they would fit into the different PYP Transdisciplinary Themes.

Grade 5 Term 2 Week 2

Good morning SIS families! This week in grade 5, we had an

amazing time!

This week in math, we learned about properties of shapes.

We looked at different shapes and different angles that are

important, like right angles. We also learned about

parallelograms and quadrilaterals.

For inquiry (how we express ourselves) we have been

working on poems called haiku. We also looked at different

types of them. We drew pictures and reflected on the way

they looked included and many more. We looked up many

songs we liked and made a list of them.

This week in Japanese, both Kanji Group and Kokugo Group

saw a movie called 平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ. It was about some

Tanuki, or Japanese racoons worried and angered about

buildings being placed and their forests being cut. It was a very

interesting story, with Tanuki being a shape-shifting animal.

Though, we only saw half of it, so we’re so excited for the next

time!

For P.E, we’ve been doing a unit about soccer, or football. We’ve

been learning and have been cooperating with each other, and

mostly, we all love it! We practiced some skills and found some

of it hard!

For ICT, we’ve been learning syntax codes, and javascript

codes. We’ve been practicing in a website called code

combat, a very fun code game including a little of fighting,

avoiding, running, and building. It was a replacement of

grasshopper, another java code website, which we

figured out was pretty boring. When Mr.Vamiq

showed us Codecombat, we instantly had so much fun!

For Music, We’ve been practicing Aruko, From Totoro.

We first practiced with bells, and saw it was hard to

match the rhythm and going in the right timing with

others. Aruko was a memorable song which everyone

knew, so it was very easy knowing how to play, but

very hard actually playing it. Though, we had a blast!

Transdisciplinary Skill: Social Skills - Communicating with others through different text types, working together as a team to retell a story (beginning, middle and end) and share the elements of it (characters, setting, plot), working with the kindergarten students

Mathematics: Addition - Fact family of 10 and 20, continued working with number sentences and the signs in a number sentence

Reading: Recognizing the structure and elements of a story, use sources of information and prior knowledge, personal stories and experiences to make meaning, guided reading, buddy reading

Dear David,

We have just read the David Gets in Trouble book and we think David should learn to be more mindful of his actions. He should stop being so rude and be careful when he plays baseball. Don’t hurt animals by pulling their tails. He should put his homework somewhere his dog can’t reach and eat it. He needs to share his toys. When he sees someone else’s birthday cake, don’t eat it before the birthday person and don’t lie. Also, don’t forget to put your pants on!
