Kindergarten - Start of Term 2! T2W1

Inquiry
We started our new theme 'How We Express Ourselves' by discussing different feelings and emotions we have and which of them are good and bad. We spent Monday afternoon free playing with the things that make us happy in the classroom. The children shared the things they enjoyed playing with the most in the classroom, and we made some centers for them to roam around and play with.

We listened to some different songs and expressed ourselves through dancing in different ways we thought were suitable for the music. The students enjoyed letting themselves go (we turned the lights off!) and experiencing different kinds of music. We had so much fun, I forgot to take photos!

I also played different kinds of music and asked the children to draw a picture of how it makes them feel/what it reminds them of. The children could sit wherever they felt most comfortable in the classroom and were told that their drawing should be completely theirs and not influenced by their friends'. It was interesting to see how everyone interpreted music in different ways. It was great to learn that there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to feelings and opinions and that everyone is different!

We also did an activity where I placed a random classroom object on the students' table and they had to draw how it made them feel/what it reminded them of.

The students painted what they think 'excitement' looks like.

We began our collection of Fountas and Pinnell books, starting with 'Pet Parade'. The students went off in small groups and had a go at reading it together. Ms. Anna and I listened to the students read it individually, and then a student volunteer read it at the front of the class while the other students followed with their own book.

In Math, we reviewed shapes and I introduced symmetry. The children seemed to enjoy playing the symmetry games on the iPad and drawing symmetrical pictures.

In Language, we learn '-ai' words. The students picked them up really well!

Grade 3 Welcome back for term 2 to SIS

After a long winter vacation we are back in the classroom and working hard.  This week we welcomed 4 new friends to our classroom!  Everyone is enjoying getting to know each other.  We also spent time talking about our goals for the new year and getting back into our routines.  Each student also came up with a word for 2020 that they either want to focus on or that means something important in their life.  This week we also started our writing unit where students will practice different genres of writing over the next 6 weeks.  In Math we are reviewing Addition and Subtraction with regrouping and will soon start Multiplication.

Here the drama club and grade 3 performance of Peter Pan from our Winter Performance!  Enjoy!!

Shared writing of a retell of a read aloud story:

We read a book called Little Cloud, the author and illustrator is Eric Carle. In the beginning, the little cloud went away from the bigger clouds to touch the top of the trees and houses. In the middle, the little cloud changed to look like a sheep, an airplane, a rabbit, a shark, two trees, a hat and a clown. In the end, it rained because all the clouds drifted back together to make a big cloud.
