Grade 5/6 Week 10 How the world works

This week, we finished our posters, info graphics and movies. As a final step of our inquiry, we practiced how to present our learning. It gave us an opportunity to think how to convey our ideas and opinions in a most effective way. During the practices, we discussed about how important the posture, body language, facial expressions and intonations were. On Thursday, during the celebration of learning, we successfully presented our central idea and lines of inquiry to our parents. They appreciated our hard wok and research about the unit. During Math class, we worked on percentages. In addition to that, we also discussed with our parents how many percentages of sleeping, game and other daily activities were done in a typical day. Overall, it was a successful parents morning and celebration of learning for us. We really enjoyed sharing our learning with them. We would like to thank them all for showing up for the day despite their busy schedule. 

Research.

Since planting our seeds, we have been checking on their progress everyday, and recording the information in our plant research books. 

Japanese class (Haiku poetry)

　先月ですが、２年生から４年生までの子どもたちが季語の入った俳句を作りました。主に冬の俳句でしたが、夏の俳句や春の俳句を作る子もいてたくさんの俳句が廊下に集まりました。発表をした後、それぞれが好きな俳句に投票をして、クラスのベスト俳句を決めました。
　Last month, Grade2-4 students made Haiku poetry using season words. Children mainly made winter Haiku, but several children also made spring Haiku and summer Haiku.
 We put all Haiku in corridor, and students voted  their favorite Haiku and decided the best Haiku in the class.

Grade 4 - Term 2 Week 7 - How The World Works - Energy

For our inquiry in Grade 4, the students have been learning about the 7 different forms of energy.  This week we looked at what electricity is and how it works.  The students first learned that electricity is the movement of electrons from negative to positive matter and that in nature this acts as static electricity.  They then learned that current electricity is the continuous flow of electrons through a circuit, or loop with the same ending point as the starting point.  Based on this knowledge, the students first became electrical engineers and were challenged to put together a circuit that could light two light bulbs.  It was easy enough for them to create a simple series circuit and get their lights shining bright.  After that, we observed that when one light bulb was removed, the circuit was broken and the other light bulb went out also.  We thought about how that doesn't happen in our houses, so they were challenged to try to create a circuit that would keep the other lights on when one was removed.  After some great ideas and attempts on their own, they were given a diagram of a parallel circuit which would do this.  They then became electricians that followed a plan and made the circuit.  The activity showed students what an electrical circuit is, how it works, how the electrical wiring in buildings is done and what different jobs are involved in the process of designing and building structures with electrical circuits running through them.  

 

Grade 3 Week 23 Term 2 How The World Works

This week Grade 3 have been working on their inquiry. Students chose a natural disaster they were interested in, and working in groups, have been researching how this sudden change impacts our Earth and living things.

Grade 5/6 Week 9 How the world works

This week, we were busy with our posters, info graphics, suisha festival and earthquake drill. As for inquiry, we finally completed our posters about the natural materials and how to use them sensibly. We also started our new project, which is to reuse the plastic bottles for daily life purposes. Firstly, we collected different sized pet bottles and watched some videos about how to reuse them in different ways. After we decided what to do with them, we recorded a video showing each step of the process. As a final step, we began to edit the video by adding subtitles and background music. As a part of this inquiry, Naomi Sense contacted Chiyoda recycling center and received some sample materials demonstrating the steps of reusing materials. We are also getting ready for our celebration of learning and looking forward to sharing our projects with the families.
