Lego Robotics Tournament Photos and Results

Congratulations to the JIES Lego Robotics Team, Hydro Heroes, for all their hard work and dedication to the team.  We went to the tournament on December 16th and faced teams of students aged 9-16 years old from around the Tokyo area!  Despite being one of the youngest teams there, the team did very well and we are all proud of them!  They got to meet other students and learn about their ideas, as well as present their own.  I hope the students continue to challenge themselves with robotics and next year do even better!

Out of the 72 teams that participated Hydro Heroes were...

Total Presentation 40th

Grade 5&6 - Week 1 - How we express ourselves.

Grade 5/6 Week 1, January 9-12, 2018
Trans disciplinary Theme: How we express ourselves
Central idea: Art often reflects cultural experience and is influenced by technological progress.
Change: How forms of expression adapt to evolving media.
Connection: How we observe culture through art.
Reflection: How we reflect on our experiences to create art.

This is what we are learning in Math classes.
Different versions of a  famous art work (The Scream) by Edvard Munch

In our inquiry classes, we chose two different artists(Paul Cezanne, Jackson Pollock) and searched about their life, experience, and culture. We also wrote a timeline to show the important events happened in their life.

Celebration of Learning.

Thank you, to everyone for coming to see Kindergartens performance. They all worked very hard, and really proved that they are risk takers.

Week 16 Where We Are in Place and Time

We attempted to do "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac for one of our Celebration of Learning songs.
The Japanese teacher helped us in our endeavor with our 8 intermission songs!
This was our dress rehearsal! Diego and Morris did the comedy skit "Who's on First."

Now listen carefully! This old time comedy skit is a play on words and you must be a thinker to understand the meaning!
Morris sang a Japanese song with the Upper Elementary group.
Diego was committed and confidently practiced Minuet in G by Bach.

Grade 4: Week 14-15: Where We Are In Place And Time: Inquiry Presentations

For this unit, the students were inquiring into how "Exploration leads to discovery and develops new understandings".  Their summative task was to choose an explorer or scientist to research based upon the three concepts of our inquiry; Causation, Function and Connection.  Their task was to find out the "Reasons, feelings attitudes and motivations toward exploration", how the "Tools and methods of exploration" worked, and "What we learn through exploration" and how it is connected between people through time.  These were also our three lines of inquiry that helped guide our unit.  The students made a non-fiction book about the person and gave a presentation with a demonstration of how the science works.  Take a look at them presenting!

Grade 1 Week 15 Where We Are in Place and Time

Grade 1 had the chance to visit the Fukugawa-Edo Museum last week. We learned what life was like in Japan 180 years ago. They had a chance to visit different houses and buildings that look like they are from the Edo period. After that, we had a quick visit to Kiyosumi Gardens for a snack and walk around to enjoy nature. It was a great morning! Thank you to all the volunteers who helped out on our field trip.
